Principal Update
Wishing You a Wonderful Easter Break!
As we head towards the end of Term 1, I reflect on the busy term that we have had.
Some highlights from the term include the Harmony Day Performance at Town Square celebrating the wonderful school culture and embracing diversity and community. The return of our whole school Swimming Carnival and the celebration of Academic Excellence at the Semester 2 Academic Awards Evening. Congratulations again go to all the award winners.
No doubt, as a school community we faced some extreme circumstances this term, in particular Ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred and its aftermath. I want to thank everyone for your support and especially the professionalism shown by our staff as we rallied together to regroup.
Despite the challenges our Year 7 and 9 students completed NAPLAN.
As we approach the April school break, I encourage students to rest and recharge over the holidays and enjoy some well-deserved downtime with family and friends.
We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, 22 April.
Ms Aimee Argiro
Executive Principal

Deputy News
Years 7-8
As we reach the end of Term 1, I take great pleasure in reflecting on the achievements and growth of our students this term. It has been a busy and exciting start to the year, and I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing our Year 7 and 8 students engage in their curriculum, extracurricular activities, and the school community—despite the interruption caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Year 7 Students – A New Beginning
For our Year 7 students, this term has marked the beginning of their high school journey. Transitioning from primary school is a significant adjustment, but I have been impressed by their enthusiasm, resilience, and determination. They have embraced the challenges and opportunities that high school offers, and I am proud of how they have navigated their first term. Many Year 7 students have actively participated in school activities both inside and outside the classroom. I encourage them to continue seizing every opportunity to build a strong foundation for the years ahead.
Year 8 Students – Building on Success
For our Year 8 students, Term 1 has been a time of reflection and growth. Now well settled into high school routines, many are taking on greater responsibilities in both their learning and their involvement in the wider school community. I have seen their confidence grow as they challenge themselves academically and socially. Whether through classroom opportunities or extracurricular activities, our Year 8 students are making the most of what is available to them. This term has provided valuable time for them to reflect on their strengths and areas for growth, and I encourage them to continue striving for their best every day.
Highlighting the Term’s Activities
This term, students have participated in a range of activities that complement their academic learning. Year 7 students took part in the annual orientation program, working with teachers and peers to set themselves up for success. They also completed NAPLAN in Week 8. Meanwhile, Year 8 students engaged in various activities focused on developing respectful relationships and exploring career pathways.
We also held our first major sporting event of the year—the swimming carnival—where both Year 7 and 8 students proudly represented their houses. Many students have also signed up for and competed in different sporting opportunities, representing the school with pride. In the final week of term, we will be holding the cross-country event. It has been wonderful to see so many students embracing the opportunities at Redbank Plains State High School with such enthusiasm.
Looking Ahead to Term 2
As we look forward to Term 2, we remain committed to supporting our students in both their academic and personal growth. I encourage all Year 7 and 8 students to set personal goals over the break—whether improving in a particular subject, focusing on attendance, or participating in an extracurricular activity. There are countless opportunities available, and I urge all students to make the most of them.
Please remember the importance of attending school every day.
Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support and commitment to your child’s education. I look forward to another successful term ahead as we continue working together to help every student reach their full potential.
Wishing everyone a restful and enjoyable holiday break.

Academic Awards – Semester 2 2024
Congratulations!
A huge congratulations to all the students recognised at this term’s Academic Awards Ceremony for their outstanding Semester 2, 2024 results!

A special shout-out to our 2024 School DUX and our incredible graduates who returned to accept their Top of Subject awards for Year 12. Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder!

A huge “Well Done” to our 2025 School Captains, who did a fantastic job managing the entire Academic Awards Ceremony at a new venue, Springfield Events Cinema! Their professionalism, confidence, and leadership ensured the night ran smoothly, making it a truly special celebration of student success.

A big round of applause as well for our talented performers who took the stage and wowed the audience with their musical performances!

A heartfelt thank you to our School DUX Award sponsor, the Redbank Plains State High School P&C Association, for their ongoing support, and to our esteemed guests, Mr Milton Dick MP and Mr Shayne Neumann MP, for attending this special celebration.
Well done to all—your achievements inspire our entire school community!
Arts Faculty News
Welcome to 2025 everyone! What a term. I would like to acknowledge the flexibility and resilience of both our staff and students in making it through an interrupted term.
New Arts Staff
This year we welcomed four new staff to our Arts faculty:
- Miss Hughes – Drama, Dance
- Miss Green – Dance
- Ms Gallichan - Music
- Mr Stead – Visual Art
We know you will add immense value to our busy Arts department and have already helped get 2025 off to a great start.
Semester 2 2024 Academic Awards Ceremony
Well done to three of our high achieving students who accepted the challenge of performing in Week 4 of Term 1 for our Semester 2 2024 Academic Awards Ceremony.
Leslie in Yr 12 performed the National Anthem and Reumel and Kristine performed a saxophone and clarinet duet titled Follow the Leader.
Thank you for sharing your musical talent with our wider school community.

Around Our Classrooms
Year 9 Dance
The 9’s have been exploring the genre of musical theatre this term as part of our Showcase unit. Students have been studying various popular musical theatre performances such as Hamilton, Wicked, and In the Heights and have been developing their performance skills in the genre. Across the term, the class has learnt a choreographed piece to “Blackout” from In the Heights, combining Jazz, HipHop, and contemporary genres.

Year 7-8 Music – A Trip Around the World
Our Year 7 and 8 students have enjoyed some hands-on performance activities this term as part of their World Music unit. Performing Havana on a wide variety of instruments was just one of these activities, during which students worked on not only their rhythms, but also their listening skills, collaborative skills and respect for each other and different cultures.

Year 12 Music in Practice – Building Your Brand
Some of our Year 12 Music in Practice students accepted the challenge of taking their Term 1 performances out into amphitheatre for a lunchtime concert in front of their peers and the wider student community. The crowd responses were enthusiastic and the applause was loud, so congratulations to these students for a great lunchtime activity and for connecting your assessment to a real-world situation.

Year 7-8 Drama – Puppetry comes to RPSHS
The Year 7’s and 8’s have been taking on the roles of master puppeteers in their current unit of Drama. They have had the opportunity to experiment with Bunraku (a Japanese style puppet) and sock puppets! Students have enjoyed creating scripts and stories to bring their puppets to life, while learning the basics of Drama.

Year 7 Media
The Media and Film program in the school has grown every year, with 2025 seeing the launch of Year 7 Media Arts for the first time. Students have been taking their first steps in what careers in the Media industry look like and building the knowledge and skills to create their own digital artworks. Students this term have been writing their own professional pitches to make a superhero movie and have been excited to create digital sketches as part of this assessment.

Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Groups
Dance Troupe and Comp Crew
This year, we are excited to start our new Dance Troupe and Comp Crew. Our Dance Troupe girls have been working hard on their performance piece for the Arts Showcase, and hopefully to visit our local primary schools to engage and encourage enrolments for our Dance program! Our Comp Crew girls have been learning their HipHop performance piece in preparation for their upcoming Eisteddfod later this year.

Centre Stage Stars
Previously Drama Extension, this after school program is currently in the process of putting together a performance for Term 2 Week 8. At Centre Stage Stars, Miss Hughes and Miss Toner have been writing scripts and directing to create a hilarious performance of short skits, sketches and improvisation for the show, ‘Redbank Plains Night Live’. The actors and creative team have been working hard to create a memorable show- so stay tuned for announcements!

Concert Band
This year, our Concert Band has outgrown the Music Block Band Room – a great problem to have. They are now rehearsing on the stage in the Performing Arts Block every Friday morning. Fantastic work!

Early in the term some of our Instrumental Music students travelled into the Queen Street Mall to watch the Queensland Wind and Brass perform. This was a free opportunity to watch a high-level Concert Band perform some interesting repertoire, featuring music from the movies. It was an enjoyable afternoon and one which we hope to do again in Semester 2.

On the last Thursday and Friday of this term, our Concert and Marching Bands will benefit from some tuition from our regional Instrumental Music Head of Department, Mr Matt Chambers and Mr Jesse Carmona, formerly of the US Navy Band. These musicians will work with our band students to add some final polish in preparation for ANZAC Day ceremonies in the first week of Term 2.
Stage Band
This year our Stage Band has grown with new members joining us from the Year 11 and 12 Music in Practice classes. These students have been a great addition to our rhythm section on bass and electric guitars, drums and keys. A big thank you to our Stage Band for dedicating every Tuesday major break to put together new and exciting repertoire.

Marching Band – ANZAC Day
Rehearsals after school are now underway in preparation for one of our most important events of the year – ANZAC Day. Thank you to our Marching Band students for giving up their Friday afternoons to ensure we represent our school with REAL pride in our wider community. Thank you also to our parents for ensuring our students get home safely after these rehearsals.

Beyond Broncos Academy
Young Leaders Raise Their Future Voices
You’re never too young to lead: this core belief beats at the heart of the new Future Voices Beyond the Broncos Leadership Program.
Twenty inspiring Year 11 and 12 leaders from Beyond the Broncos program schools across Queensland and northern New South Wales were welcomed into the inaugural program at an uplifting launch event at Red Hill on Friday 21 March.
Among the twenty students was Redbank Plains SHS Year 12 student Emily Stevenson. Emily was selected out of over 100 applications to be part of the Future Voices in 2025.
Future Voices supports young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in growing their skills, empowering them to lead their school and community, and encouraging them to achieve their goals.
Throughout the year, the students will connect over Zoom for monthly Leadership Forums, contribute to cultural events, network with other young leaders, attend the Beyond the Broncos Leadership Summit, and lead NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week events.
They also have opportunities to nominate for the Broncos’ CEO for a Day initiative, a week-long leadership experience in Sydney and Canberra, and the national NRL Indigenous Leadership Summit in Sydney.
Congratulations Emily on being selected for the Future Voices Beyond the Broncos Leadership Program! We look forward to seeing you grow in your leadership role this year and what you will achieve.

Junior School - JSS
JSS: Year 7
As term one draws to a close, it is wonderful to reflect on how well our
Year 7 students have settled into high school life. With new routines, new subjects, and new friendships to navigate, they have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and resilience.
From the very first day, Year 7s have shown a positive attitude, quickly adapting to the increased independence and responsibility that high school brings. Teachers have been impressed by their eagerness to engage in lessons, ask questions, and participate in the wide range of extracurricular activities on offer.
We are incredibly proud of how well the Year 7 cohort has adjusted to this exciting new chapter. As the year continues, we look forward to seeing them continue to grow, learn, and contribute to our school community.
Congratulations to our Year 7s on a fantastic start to high school—keep up the great work!
What our year 7s had to say…
“I was worried that I wouldn't be able to move on from my primary days and primary friends, but I met a group of people who showed me that high school is great.”- Tanya
“My favourite thing about year 7 so far is that me and my team for touch won, and now we are play for Met West.” - Ruby
“One thing I am looking forward to next term is cooking.”- Dario

NAPLAN NEWS
In Week 8, students in Year 7 and 9 completed NAPLAN testing. We had over 80% total student participation, which was a fantastic effort especially after the significant disruptions caused by TC Alfred.
Feedback form teachers was overwhelmingly positive, praising our students for being so focused and settled during these sessions.
I’d like to thank our amazing support staff and team of senior student volunteers who provided and served breakfast and lunch for our NAPLAN students over these testing days.
Congratulations everyone on an amazing NAPLAN effort!
Meet and Greet
Thank You for Joining Our Year 7 Meet & Greet Afternoon Tea!
A huge thank you to all the students and families who attended our Year 7 Meet & Greet Afternoon Tea at the start of Term 1! It was fantastic to see so many of you connecting with our amazing support staff and leadership team, as well as getting to know the friendly faces here to help our new students settle in.
Building strong relationships between families and staff is so important, and we’re excited to be on this journey together. Here’s to a great start to Year 7!

ARGO Learning Excursion
The students from the ARGO learning space had an interesting, informative, and experiential day of learning at the Queensland Museum last Thursday. They were enthralled by Brisbane artists Counterpilot, who were staging a series of experiments exploring awe in all its forms—from the awesome to the awful.
The Awe Experiment is a highly sensory experience that uses Electroencephalography (EEG) to measure the brain's electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp. It was fantastic to see so many students volunteering to be part of the experiment, but it was Jason Brown who was lucky enough to be the chosen participant.
Students’ imaginations were also ignited by SparkLab, an interactive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) space. The day was truly memorable, with plenty of exploration and hands-on learning, and so much fun was had by all.
A big thank you to Mrs. Andrea Cox and Mr. Darcy Pepper for organising such a fun and educational day out for all students in the ARGO program!

Year 8s Take a Chance on Learning!
Our Year 8 students proved that hard work pays off! After completing their assignments ahead of schedule, they were rewarded with a fun and interactive game-based learning lesson on Probability, led by Turn to Teach intern Mr. Nguyen.
Exploring the numeracy strand of chance, students engaged in real-time simulations of the lottery and other probability-based games. It was a fantastic way to see maths in action while reinforcing key concepts in a hands-on and engaging way.
Well done to our Year 8s for their effort and enthusiasm—who knew learning about probability could be such a win?

Retirement News: Celebrating Flo and Steve Scott
After years of dedicated service to Redbank Plains State High School and the community, Flo and Steve Scott are retiring to Toowoomba.
Their involvement within the schools started in 1987 at Kruger State Primary School, where Flo began as a school cleaner, and went on to manage the tuckshop. She then joined Redbank Plains State High School in 2014 to manage both the canteen and Uniform Shop.
Steve joined Flo at Redbank Plains in 2022 as a Groundsman, fixing and maintaining the gardens or anything the staff required assistance with. Together, they’ve made this school and community an amazing place.
They’ve also been key members of the P&C Association, and now alongside their daughter, the current P&C President.
"All 3 of our girls went to both Kruger and Redbank Plains State High School, and have always been committed to the community," said Steve.
Flo and Steve’s advocacy secured funding and led efforts like trivia nights and working bees, shaping Redbank Plains SHS into the inclusive school it is today. Last year, they even gave up their two-week holiday to help with landscaping, creating murals, sandstone steps, and relocating the yarning circle to spread awareness around Indigenous Heritage Culture.
"Both Kruger State School & Redbank Plains State High School have amazing staff and student it will always hold a special place in our lives. And we will still pop in when in town to check on the school progress," said Flo and Steve.
Their commitment to service extends beyond the school, with significant contributions to the Redbank Plains Sub-Branch of the RSL. Each year, they’ve played a crucial role in organising ANZAC Day commemorations, working with local schools and the Ipswich Council to ensure these events are marked with dignity and respect.
Even in retirement, they plan to volunteer in Toowoomba, helping with homelessness and making library bags for schools. Flo will also be focusing on crafts, while Steve will restore his 1947 Morris Minor car.
The mark Flo and Steve have left on Redbank State High will last for years to come. Thank you both for your incredible dedication, kindness, and service. You’ve truly made a difference, and your legacy will continue to inspire.

Two of our incredible athletes continue to dominate in their sports, showing exactly why they were named Joint Junior Sportsmen of the Year!
Hudson, in Year 8, has shone at the Queensland Athletics State Championships, claiming State Champion titles in Discus, Hammer, and Javelin, while securing a close 2nd place in Shotput! Next stop—National Championships in Perth on April 3rd, where he will compete in all four events for Queensland!
Another student in Year 10, Cassidy, made history on March 23rd, setting a new AUSTRALIAN RECORD in the Men’s 15-16 10,000m RowErg, with an incredible time of 38 minutes and 3 seconds!
A huge congratulations to both athletes on their outstanding achievements! We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!
Jarvis Wins Silver at National Roller Hockey Championships!
From 28–30 March, Year 11 student Jarvis took to the rink in Melbourne, representing Queensland in the U19 roller hockey team—an incredible achievement considering he has only been playing the sport for 10 months!
The QLD U19 team battled their way to a Silver Medal, making Jarvis an official national silver medallist. He was also the only player from Ipswich in the competition, proudly showcasing the talent emerging from our local community.
Queensland sent three teams—Men’s, Ladies, and U19—and all returned home with Silver, a fantastic result for the state.
Jarvis is understandably proud of this achievement, and so are we! Keep an eye out for him as he becomes one of the faces of a new rink/roller hockey club launching soon at Bundamba Skating Rink.
Congratulations, Jarvis!

QLD Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Term 2, students in Years 8 and 10 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers closer to the time. If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website below.
